As we move into the dog days of summer, MLB bullpens are under the microscope with the trade deadline looming and postseason races intensifying. Roles are shifting, new names are emerging, and veteran closers are fighting to prove they still belong.

Raisel Iglesias back in the ninth-inning spotlight

Once struggling, Iglesias (pictured above) has roared back to form. In June’s low point, he surrendered three runs in a blown save during a 10–11 loss to Arizona. But since then, he’s been unstoppable, stranding runs and delivering in high-pressure spots.

  • Iglesias has recorded 15 straight scoreless outings, with a 18:1 K/BB ratio across 13.2 innings.
  • In his latest two saves against the Cardinals (July 11 & 12), he worked two clean, dominant innings, striking out one and then perfecting one, including his 11th save July 12.
  • Iglesias was awarded both saves right before the All-Star break, signaling a firm shift away from Dylan Lee.

Ronny Henriquez is becoming Miami’s emerging shutdown option

Across the NL East, Henriquez has emerged as a hidden gem at the back of the Marlins’ bullpen:

  • Henriquez boasts a 2.54 ERA, 33.3% strikeout rate, and has been unscored upon in July, giving up only one run since June 13.
  • He’s secured four saves since late June, including a perfect 9th vs. Twins on July 1 and a clean frame on July 3. He struck out the side on July 10 and has multiple strikeouts in five of his past ten outings.
  • Henriquez came into the game in the eighth inning on July 18th and shut down the Royals, only to have Calvin Faucher blow his fifth save of the season in the ninth. This should strengthen his case to take over the closer’s role.

Seth Halvorsen battling through injury to become Rockies closer

The Colorado bullpen remains in flux, but Seth Halvorsen is emerging as the primary option in the ninth—when healthy. Halvorsen racked now has four straight saves and seven of his past eight, but was shelled on July 9th in Boston, allowing four hits, five earned runs, and a walk without retiring a batter. He was sidelined just before the break with forearm fatigue, however.

During Halvorsen’s injury, Victor Vodnik earned his second save of the season on July 12 against the Reds, striking out three in a dominant frame. Yet, his next appearance resulted in a blown save and a walk-off loss.
