Welcome to the 20th installment of our Weekly Hot Prospects Report ranking the top minor-league performances from the week of Aug. 27th through Sept. 3:
1. Justyn-Henry Malloy, 3B, Tigers (Triple-A Toledo)
Malloy finished the week by hitting homers in four straight games, capping off a 9-for-20 performance with a 1.857 OPS, 4 doubles, 10 runs and 7 walks in 6 games. The 23-year-old has a .293/.431/.510 triple-slash with 23 homers, 5 steals and an International League-leading 100 walks on the season. Malloy has done nothing but hit since being taken by the Braves in the 6th round of the 2021 draft out of Georgia Tech, putting up a career line .288/.416/.475 with 45 dingers in 290 games. Blocked in Atlanta by Austin Riley at third base and Matt Olson at first base, Malloy was traded to the Tigers in the Joe Jimenez deal last December. The Tigers may want to get a look at Malloy in Detroit in September to see where he might fit best, as he could wind up in a corner-outfield spot, third base or DH. Malloy could hit near the top of the lineup with excellent on-base skills to go with power that has ticked up this season. We’re dreaming of a .280 average with a .375 OBP and 20-plus homers in a Tigers lineup that should keep getting better as their latest rebuilding effort hits its stride.
2. Junior Caminero, 3B, Rays (Double-A Montgomery)
Caminero capped off a 4-homer week with 2 long balls on Sunday, finishing with a .409/.536/1.045 triple-slash in 6 games. The 20-year-old has 6 homers in his last 8 games, pushing his season total to 28 dingers in 107 games between High-A and Double-A. Caminero is up to a .943 OPS with 17 homers in 71 games for Montgomery and looks ready for a taste of Triple-A to finish the season.
3. Jackson Chourio, OF, Brewers (Double-A Biloxi)
Chourio stuffed the stat sheet last week by going 8-for-25 with 6 runs, 1 double, 2 homers, 7 RBIs, 3 walks, 3 steals and a .993 OPS. The 19-year-old got his triple-slash up to .282/.336/.471 with 21 homers and 37 steals for Biloxi.
4. Curtis Mead, 2B/3B, Rays (Triple-A Durham)
Mead found his power stroke last week by putting up 3 homers, a .951 SLG and 9 RBIs. The 22-year-old doubled his homer total for the season to 6 while pushing his triple-slash up to .299/.390/.498 for Durham. He will surely find his way back to Tampa Bay sometime in September.
5. Robby Snelling, SP, Padres (Double-A San Antonio)
Snelling tossed 5 no-hit innings with 9 strikeouts at Wichita on Wednesday, but issued 3 free passes as his control has wavered with 11 walks in his past 14.2 frames. The 19-year-old southpaw has been sensational all season, going a combined 10-1 with a 1.80 ERA over 3 levels and reaching Double-A.
6. Chad Dallas, SP, Blue Jays (Double-A New Hampshire)
Dallas dazzled with 11 strikeouts and no walks in 7 scoreless innings on Friday, allowing just 3 hits in the hitter’s haven of Reading. The 23-year-old right-hander has bounced back with a 2.86 ERA since a terrible July (10.93 ERA) to lower his season mark to 4.17 with 96 strikeouts in 86.1 IP for New Hampshire.
7. Julian Aguiar, SP, Reds (Double-A Chattanooga)
Aguiar racked up 12 strikeouts with no walks in 7 innings at Pensacola on Thursday, allowing 4 hits and 1 run. The 22-year-old righty lowered his ERA to 3.47 with 52 strikeouts in 46.2 IP for Chattanooga.
8. Dominic Hamel, SP, Mets (Double-A Binghamton)
Hamel posted his third 11-strikeout game of the season on Friday, allowing 3 hits and 2 walks in 6 scoreless innings against Harrisburg. The 24-year-old right-hander has a whopping 147 Ks in 116 innings for Binghamton with a 4.11 ERA.
9. Blake Dunn, OF, Reds (Double-A Chattanooga)
Dunn is back on the list yet again by putting up a 1.228 OPS with 2 homers and 3 steals last week. The 24-year-old has a 1.018 OPS with 14 homers, 31 steals and 70 runs scored in 68 games for Chattanooga.
10. Ricky Tiedemann, SP, Blue Jays (Double-A New Hampshire)
Tiedemann continues to put up remarkable strikeout rates, racking up 16 Ks in 6.2 innings over 2 starts with a 1.35 ERA last week. The 21-year-old southpaw has a combined 66 strikeouts in 33.1 innings over 3 levels as he works his way back from a biceps injury.
