As we roll out our latest update to the RotoProspects Top 700 Prospect fantasy baseball rankings, let’s dive into the key updates and storylines surrounding the top-ranked prospects this week.

Big Movers & New Names in the Top 30

Nick Kurtz (1B, ATH) – After a strong spring, Kurtz (pictured above) wasted no time adjusting to Triple-A pitching, posting a 1.552 OPS with a three home runs and ten hits in his first five games. The 22-year-old first baseman combines elite plate discipline with plus power, and if he keeps producing at this level, the A’s may have no choice but to fast-track him to the majors by midseason.

Cam Smith (3B, HOU) cracked the top 20 after his debut, where he showed poise at the plate and quality defense. He’s another example of the Astros’ development machine working overtime.

Konnor Griffin (OF, PIT) – Still just 19, Griffin is turning heads early in his pro debut season with his rare blend of power and 70-grade speed. A former two-sport prep standout, he’s flashing superstar tools in the Florida Complex League, prompting some scouts to already dream on him as a future five-tool centerpiece in Pittsburgh’s outfield.

Roman Anthony: Waiting in the wings… and mashing

Roman Anthony may only be 3-for-16 to start his Triple-A campaign, but don’t let the small sample fool you — two of those hits left the yard, and the third nearly went for an inside-the-parker. He also has just as many walks (7) as strikeouts so far. Widely viewed as the top position player prospect in baseball, Anthony is already pressing the issue in Boston.

The challenge? A crowded outfield picture. With Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu, and soon Masataka Yoshida all jockeying for playing time, Anthony’s path to the majors isn’t wide open just yet. But if he keeps swinging like this, someone’s going to have to move.

As noted on the Just Baseball Show, a midseason trade feels inevitable — but who’s the odd man out? Abreu’s been hot, Rafaela has the contract, and Yoshida’s owed $55 million. One thing’s clear: if Roman goes nuclear, the Red Sox front office will have a decision to make.

The rest of the Top Five

Sebastian Walcott (SS, TEX) The 19-year-old Bahamian phenom is carrying the hopes of a baseball-hungry nation with him. Determined to dominate every day, Walcott’s elite power and drive to represent the Bahamas on and off the field make him one of the sport’s most electrifying young talents.

Walker Jenkins (OF, MIN) has held steady at No. 3 as he flashes his elite 70-grade hit tool and all-around polish. Jenkins has the look of a future franchise cornerstone.

Jasson Dominguez (OF, NYY) is already making noise in the Bronx and reminding everyone why the “Martian” hype train was never off track.

Matt Shaw (2B/3B, CHC) is off to a sharp start in the majors, using his quick bat and defensive flexibility to hold down a key role for the Cubs.
