Big movers & storylines this week
Matt Shaw enters the majors
The Cubs’ top prospect, Shaw made his MLB debut during the Tokyo Series against the Dodgers on Tuesday and Wdnesday. In the opener, Shaw started at second base, marking his first major-league appearance. He got his first major-league hit the next day, going 1-for-5 with 2 Ks. His participation in this high-profile series reflects the organization’s confidence in his potential to contribute at the highest level.
Cam Smith making noise in Astros camp
One of the more under-the-radar breakouts in spring training has been Astros phenom Smith (pictured above). The 2023 draft pick has been flashing power and gap-to-gap hitting ability, making Houston’s front office take notice. Just weeks ago, the idea of Smith breaking camp with the Astros seemed far-fetched. Now, it’s a real possibility. Following another strong performance in Wednesday’s game against the Mets—where he notched two more hits—manager Joe Espada acknowledged that the team is seriously considering him for Opening Day.
Zac Veen’s resurgence in Rockies camp
After injury-plagued 2023 and 2024 seasons, Veen is reminding everyone why he was once a top-10 fantasy prospect. The former first-round pick has been showing off his elite speed, improved contact skills, and defensive versatility in Rockies camp. He’s slashing .298/.377/.553 with four doubles, a triple, two home runs and seven stolen bases so far this spring. If he carries this momentum into the season, he could be a major dynasty asset by late 2025.
